On August 6, 2005 I went fishing with my brother Brent his two boys and some friends. We were fishing at a location called 20 minute rock on our boat. The fish were biting like crazy. We all caught our limit in no time. Little did I know that the catch of the day, or catch of a lifetime was yet to come. As we were fishing we noticed a huge humpback Whale breaching a half-mile away or so towards shore. I had my camera with me and asked my brother to move the boat closer to the whale so I could photograph it. He didn't want to move because the fishing was great. We kept on fishing and that whale kept on jumping and flapping the water with his large fins. I took a few shots of this whale from a distance. I was going crazy. Here I had my camera and this huge whale was jumping only a half-mile away and my brother didn't want to move the boat. I just knew I was going to miss this great opportunity. I never have seen a whale jumping like this, over and over again. I knew he would stop soon and I was going to miss it. Finally we caught our limit of fish and my brother was ready to go. Fortunately the whale was still jumping and flapping the water like crazy. I had my brother position the boat so Morro Rock could be in the background. Everyone on the boat would yell out, "there he is!" as he jumped. One time he came up right in the middle of the rock and jumped towards our boat. Everyone was yelling, "Did you get that? Did you get it?" "Yes I got it!" I said. It was one of the most exciting days of my life. On the way back in I looked at the photos I had just taken with my digital camera. (Canon 20D, 70-200 IS 2.8 lens) I could not believe my eyes. If you ever get the chance to go whale watching in Morro Bay don't forget to take your camera!
